Teaching

For Conductors

Mark Shapiro‘s patient insight into all the skills and professional areas encompassed by conducting was of enormous value to me as I was first exploring this career path.

Lidiya Yankovskaya, Music Director, Chicago Opera Theater

I work with conductors on technique, score reading and preparation, and on rehearsal and performance issues.

Mark Shapiro is an excellent instructor who teaches to the unique needs of each individual student. He took time to get to know me as a person, pushed me outside of my comfort zone, was patient and gave me the tools I needed to overcome challenges I faced in my conducting at that time.

MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

In my teaching of conducting, I’m committed to the principle that conducting challenges are fundamentally musical (and sometimes also interpersonal). The path to solving conducting problems and gaining fluency and confidence on the podium always entails, on one hand, a deepening of musical insight and hearing, and on the other hand, a subtle appreciation of other minds. A genuinely reliable, lasting and vital conducting technique can only be built from the inside out. In my workshops, classes and lessons, I work with you to help you coordinate intellect, ear, spirit, heart and body, guiding you to know what you want to be communicating and how you can be most effective at communicating it.

Half conducting professor…half Jedi master.

Christopher O’Riley, NPR From the Top

In the middle of the great lockdown of 2020, I got a message, letting me know that the Juilliard School was offering online classes in conducting and score-reading. This led to me becoming a student of this marvelous human being, Mark Shapiro, and today I finally got to meet him in person.

I did online conducting classes with a lot of teachers during the pandemic. Nobody did it better than this man, and I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be about to do what I’m about to do without him.
